Cafe Atlas is no ordinary sandwich shop but a delicious, gourmet hidden gem in southern Utah.
There are many sandwich shops and delis that offer good sandwiches in town but none like Cafe Atlas on 188 N Bluff Street. The small café has an unconventional location, inside the Bosch Kitchen Store, 188 N. Bluff St., on the left corner past the register. All the kitchen equipment could be distracting, but once you get your meal, Chef Justin "Puck" Lewis' food takes center stage.
The café offers paninis such as the Monte Cristo, buffalo chicken and El Diablo. The salads include grilled romaine heart, and they offer a soup of the day. They also have some sides to pick from, like German potato salad and caponata.
The cashier at the café was especially nice, and she gave us time to stare at the incredibly simple menu. After we ordered we waited for our food, and we could see the chef prepare it in the open kitchen. It took a little long to get our food, but it was well worth it.
I had the Monte Cristo Panini and it was something special. It's a hot Panini on Challah bread, and it melts in your mouth. The warm turkey and melted swiss cheese are pure genius, and the raspberry preserves sent it over the top. I was hesitant about using the side of preserves, to be honest I didn't know how they fit in. Once I tried one bite dipped in the preserves I couldn't eat the rest of the sandwich without it.
The Caponata was amazing. The side was only a couple of spoons but it had big flavors. It was packed with dried fruit, olives and a crunchy, nutty taste. I tasted a yummy vinaigrette in it as well. I could order just a bowl of this stuff; it was that good.
Even though the restaurant is located in a store, the owners have done an impressive job in creating a space that feels independent from the equipment. The retro studded chairs are a special touch. There is additional loft seating that is comfortable and welcoming. They have couches, books and free WiFi.
All the sandwiches are under $7.25, which makes the menu easy for the customer. I think they have something for everybody, and for the price you could afford to go a few times until you find your match.
The staff was great, and it's nice to see that the executive chef actually makes your sandwich.
The food tasted fresh, and it definitely has different flare unlike other delis. They make their own bread, and you can definitely taste that unique homemade flavor.
What's really special about this place is everything on the menu looks good, and you can tell that it was well thought out. Some of the sides are unique, and where else can you get a cheap, not from a bag, grilled romaine salad?
Its a great place for a light lunch, and the food is definitely worth the price. This place is so good; I'm already planning my next lunch there.
